I have had the good fortune to have trained in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for almost six years now and have been involved in martial arts since my childhood. I split my time between Los Angeles and the UK and have trained GJJ exclusively with instructors from the Gracie Academy in Torrance.
Firstly, let me say that although I have spent a lifetime in the martial arts and hold multiple black belts, my street readiness prior to meeting Rener Gracie was non-existent. Within two weeks of meeting Rener I practically walked away from over 20 years of training to embrace the GJJ philosophy. Today I hold a purple belt in GJJ and I have had the good fortune to train directly with Rener, Ryron and several other Gracie instructors on a regular basis. It was in that context that I was introduced to Sacha. I was immediately blown away by his insight, commitment to detail in his teaching and his exceptional command of technique. This guy is really special. There are a lot of jiu-jitsu instructors out there but a lot less that truly understand the difference between being street ready and sport jiu-jitsu. And of those, even fewer that are great teachers of what they know. Sacha is all of those. He took me right back to the beginning of my jiu-jitsu training and explained intricate details in the basics that either I had missed earlier or forgotten. During my instruction Sacha was able to not just explain but also demonstrate his skills practically beyond any shadow of a doubt. The lineage of his instruction and skill is abundantly clear to see and feel. As a consequence, my overall effectiveness in jiu-jitsu improved dramatically after a few weeks of training with Sacha.
My children (aged 10 and 12) have also trained in jiu-jitsu for several years. They absolutely loved training with Sacha and he was extremely able in keeping their attention, making it fun but also teaching them the skills and information. He has the ability to relate to everyone and either simplify a technique or explain its complexities to the most inquisitive mind.
Sacha is a unique talent. Not just in the world of self-defence or jiu-jitsu but as a teacher. I cannot recommend him highly enough and encourage everyone, no matter your level of skill, to experience his magic.
I began training with Sacha as I wanted a street effective self defence against any opponent and that’s exactly what he provides. His teaching style is very comprehensive and full of detail but he also creates a relaxed learning environment. I can honestly say training with Sacha has changed my life and if you are thinking about training with him just do it! It will change your life!
I’ll never forget the first time I had ever felt despairingly hopeless. Lying flat on my back, struggling desperately to hold onto the smiling British assailant mounted above me. Every buck, block or cover I tried to avoid his strikes was absolutely worthless. Despite my struggles nothing I did could stop the barrage of life threatening elbows. Each one slamming with bone crushing force into the mat just inches above my head. Long after my bone would have given way, my will to fight finally broke. Smiling, my new friend helped me back up to my feet.
That day, Sacha Martin-Luther King changed my life forever.
Sacha Martin-Luther King exposed me to what had always been my worst-case scenario. As someone who had struggled with anxiety for years, confrontation had always been my worst fear. It is difficult for most people to understand paralyzing social anxiety. It is a crushing, smothering feeling that completely paralyzes people like me. For years I sought counselling and medication. At my peak I was on a cocktail of five different drugs that barely lessened the symptoms and helped me get through the day without devolving to panic.
Throughout all of those years I always somehow felt that Martial Arts held the true cure for my condition. Somehow, I felt that if I could only prepare myself for the worst case scenario… maybe, just maybe I could get control of my flight-or-fight response.
Like many others I started Karate as a small child, later expanding into to Tae Kwon Do. Eventually I would receive my Black belt in Hapkido from an elderly Grand Master while living in South Korea. I had always hoped that each new rank, each new skill might hold the secret to finally overcoming my struggle. That I might finally unlock the key to doing normal everyday things… like walking to the grocery store or going to the movie theatre. Yet with all of the training, I never felt truly comfortable… truly capable in my own skin.
Sacha’s personalized mentorship, the time, effort, and dedication that he has poured into my life will always be measured as one of my most valuable experiences. Sacha Martin-Luther King broke me down in just a few minutes, but has devoted himself wholly to building my back up. The combination of his mentorship, his Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and KAGS instruction had been the one factor that had been missing my entire life! Though I had trained in Martial Arts for nearly 20 years, I felt more capable after one session with Sacha than I ever had before.
Whether in a classroom, a seminar setting, or in private lessons, Sacha’s trademark way of boiling complex concepts into simple principles will change the way that you think about self-defense. When raining with him it becomes clear, very early on, that YOU can do this. That YOU are capable and that HE can take you there. You don’t have to train for 5, 10 or even 15 years to prepare yourself for some fictitious combat scenario. Rather after your very first class, seminar or private you will walk out the door a more prepared, more confident, more capable you.
To conclude, I have overcome my anxiety issues completely. Not only that, I now teach self-defense 5 days a week to both children and adults. The principles that Sacha poured into my life are being passed on every single day. I believe that my future will be shaped by the principles of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and the impact that it has had on my life.
If I were lucky enough I would train with Sacha every day. I doubt that a lifetime would allow me to learn all that he has to offer. He has truly made me a better man, a better father, and a better teacher. It is my sincere opinion that there is no better mentor, no better ambassador of the art than the man I claim as my instructor, the one and only Sacha Martin-Luther King
I have been training Jiu-Jitsu for around 8 months now, and have been training with Sacha since September last year. During this time Sacha has supported and trained me to attain my Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Pink Belt.
I would highly recommend that every woman completes this training, as I fear it is often something women only think about doing after an INCIDENT.
This is the situation I found myself in. I have had several NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES, and finally it dawned on me that I needed to make same changes and learn skills to protect myself. I could talk for a long time about the techniques, their validity and applicability to every situation.
However, for me, one of the greatest lessons I have taken away from my time with Sacha, is my ability to now identify and minimise risk, and my ‘situational awareness’, not putting myself in the vulnerable position in the first place. Training Jiu Jitsu is completely changing my outlook on life & how I see myself. Prior to my Women Empowerment training ( & Gracie Combatives at UKGJJ), I have been crippled for many years by terribly low self esteem, no self confidence & a general anxiety about life. My time with Sacha & at his school, has really help me to shift some of this stuff, and given me a new drive and motivation to achieve things across various areas in my life.
Sacha is an incredibly kind and funny guy, who always boosted me up & went the extra mile to keep engaging me in my training.
I personally have found Sacha to deliver training in a very relaxed but informative way, and really helping me identify and focus on the areas that would benefit me the most.
I continue to train Jiu-Jitsu, and find it to be the most fun & beneficial activity & training I have ever undertaken. Additionally, I find myself feeling a much greater sense of calmness and peace in my life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sacha for his wisdom, kindness, honesty & giving me a sense of hope. I hope to be training under Sacha for many years to come.
I can heartily recommend Sacha as a world class trainer who has an innate ability to teach people in a humane way the deadly art of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
I have traveled all over Europe and had been unable to find such an accomplished and down to earth instructor , I would also urge you office execs to check him out as he provides excellent value.
I am a 49 year male who began training with Sacha after the death of a friend in a street attack. I have no previous martial arts experience. My goal is purely to be able to protect myself and my loved ones in the event of street violence. I have zero interest in competition jiu jitsu or MMA.
I am extremely fastidious in everything that I do and I did a lot of research over a long period of time to identify the very best instructor that I could find. It was important to me that the instructor was fully certified by the Gracie Academy in Torrance, that they focussed on street applicable techniques, and that I actually liked them on a personal level. Sacha has not only met all my training requirements in full, he has far exceeded them.
I am currently working through the Gracie Combatives program via private lessons with Sacha. I was hooked from my very first lesson with him. That first lesson gave me the confidence that even with no previous experience and well past my prime, I could still learn to protect myself and my family.
Private lessons allow me to progress at a pace that is specifically tailored to my learning style and to my physical capabilities (or lack thereof!). I am absolutely certain that I would not have made the same progress in group class.
Having someone of Sacha’s skill level correct my technique is incredibly valuable to me, and I do not underestimate the benefits it brings. It gives me great confidence that only the correct techniques are entrained and committed to my muscle memory. Working with Sacha also guarantees the delivery of perfect bad guy indicators from my training partner. This is important because it ensures that I am learning to respond appropriately to realistic attack behaviour. If you are following the Gracie Combatives program you need to train with this man. Although the Gracie University materials are of high quality there is no substitute for exploring the techniques in person with an expert who knows every subtlety within them.
It is very important to me that I remain injury free when training. Sacha provides a safely paced training environment that ramps up the pressure only as much as my progress allows. This safe progression has kept me injury free throughout my first year of training. Friends who have joined fast paced competitive sports jiu jitsu schools have been side-lined by injury more than once in the same timeframe.
On a personal level, Sacha is a friendly, easy going guy who is clearly very passionate and very skilled at passing on his knowledge to his students. His focus and dedication to his student’s progress is the hallmark of an extremely skilled teacher.
Training with Sacha I have been fascinated to see occasional glimpses of just what can be achieved by high level practitioners of Gracie jiu jitsu. His ability to control me and indeed make me tap out from positional control alone is a fascinating insight into the skillset that I‘d like to develop in the future.
If you are considering engaging Sacha for your training I can not recommend him highly enough. I make a weekly three hour drive to train with him despite the presence of well-regarded jiu jitsu clubs right on my doorstep. That should speak volumes.
I was interested in learning BJJ after searching for the best self defence. A family member is a police officer and did Jiu-Jitsu for police training and I was amazed how it is non aggressive yet it is 100% effective.
I started searching for Jiu-Jitsu classes when I came across a video by Rener Gracie and It convinced me to give BJJ a try. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is different from other BJJ schools because the programmes are structured so you can tick off the classes you have done and you can see what you need to do to get the next belt so if you are goal orientated like me, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu schools are for you! Since the Gracie family invented BJJ, you know what they are teaching you is authentic which is important to me because I don’t want to get ripped off thinking I am learning self defence when I am learning techniques for sport.
One of the things that attracted me was the Women Empowered programme. It teaches you the techniques on how to get out of horrible situations such as chokes and weapon encounters and even how to avoid being in that situation in the first place!
I walked in UKGJJ Bradford to see if street applicable BJJ (GJJ!) was useful as I have tried martial arts before but the techniques I thought wasn’t useful in real life situations and was more like a dance class. I met Sacha who made me feel welcome and went in depth on the technique so I felt confident on what I was doing and why I was doing it. Sacha is quick to give positive, constructive feedback which gives you confidence and reassurance. I found GJJ very useful and Sacha is a very passionate teacher who is invested in you and will take the time to make sure you understand the techniques so that you can walk out of the school and be confident that you can defend yourself. Because of his teaching style, you are guaranteed improvement every lesson.
BJJ is about saving your energy in a fight and puts technique over size and strength. Because of this, anyone can do it. It’s not about how much you can hurt the other person, its about how to avoid being hit. As someone who doesn’t like conflict, I think this is an ethical martial art and is without a doubt the most effective martial art.
Sasha goes above and beyond and teaches you more than you need to know. When you are looking for somewhere to train, you look at how good the martial art is and you also look at how good the instructor is. Sacha is amazing and will pick out techniques and apply it to other situations so that you have different options when defending yourself. This is important because you need to be well prepared as there are no rules in street fights.
You have to like the instructor otherwise you wont enjoy training. Sacha is the most likable person that I have ever met, I have not heard a bad thing about Sacha and he genuinely cares for your progression. Because of Sacha, I am hooked on Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and see myself doing it for the rest of my life.
After training at other places I didn’t think I was getting any better at Jiu-Jitsu.
After a couple of Internet searches I came across Sacha King and I’ve never looked back.
When I walked into UKGJJ Bradford I didn’t no what to expect to be honest, in a way….I didn’t expect much due to past experiences with other martial artists. Sacha was different he was very welcoming and made me comfortable.
We spoke about what I wanted and any goals I want to achieve etc and what do I already know about Jiu-Jitsu and what level would I maybe stand at.
After a brief 10 minutes of going over a few basic things it was decided that it was best for me to do Gracie combative course.
I’ve never looked back, even since achieving my blue belt I still train with Sacha on a weekly basis and he has become a good friend and role model.
We now are working on different targets and goals and I’m excited about the future of becoming a better martial artist as he not only helped me on becoming better in Jiu-Jitsu but also a better and more confident person.
I wish I would have found Sacha a long time ago.
Better late than never!
Having trained with Sacha for nearly over 7 years now, I can say with authority that he is without doubt one of the most skilled, caring and attentive instructors I have come across.
When I first met Sacha I wanted to study the real Gracie jiu Jitsu for self defence as my competition grappling days were behind me. I have a broad base of martial arts experience including other black belts and experience teaching the military.
I am aware of the need for simplicity when teaching self defence that may be used for real and I was prepared to travel to learn from anyone I considered able to tech it properly. The 140 mile round trip to train with Sacha was worth every penny.
His attention to detail in my training and total consideration of my needs, skill levels and abilities was what sold it. His knowledge of applying the Gracie art at learning speed and at full contact training speed with aggression in scenario work is exemplary. You are never left wondering “would this work”; you will know because you will have drilled and pressure tested it at every level.
Sacha’s ability to analyse your movement and technique and then adapt the techniques to help you perform, within the integrity of Helio’s art is amazing and the skills I have learned will be with me always. He was and is always able to see things through my eyes and lead me in the best way to grasp the important principles of Jiu Jitsu.
I consider Sacha a friend, instructor and mentor who has always made time for his student both on and off the mat. His guidance in the art had helped me handle difficult mat moments and also better handle difficult stand up aggression moments within my work place. I cannot thank him enough.
He is a gentleman who cares about what he does and many instructors could learn a lesson from him, not just in the fighting arts. I think despite training with many martial arts legends from around the world, I will always consider myself his student and look forward to continuing my journey with his guidance and support.
I would highly recommend him to any individual that wishes to develop themselves, learn self defence and self confidence or to any professional organisation that cares about its staff and their safety.
My first recollection of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was when the UFC started, I was currently training in kickboxing. Despite training for 10 years under World Middleweight Kickboxing Champion Arthur O’Loughlin, it was always in the back of my mind what would happen if a fight went to the ground.
5 years ago I got to know that there was actually a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu club in Bradford, and at the time it was the only one in Europe!! How good was that! This was when I first met my friend and influential entrepreneur Sacha M.L King. It was clear then that Sacha’s teaching style and knowledge was second to none, and it was addictive. Despite trying many other forms of martial arts after kickboxing, I never felt as though I was being taught by someone special, someone who really knows their stuff. After training with Sacha & his team for 13 months I achieved my Gracie Jiu-Jitsu blue belt with a score of 97%. I had now found not only a martial art that would protect me against a bigger, heavier, more aggressive opponent, I had found a teacher who is at the top of his game, someone who could influence me to keep going.
Having known Sacha for 5 years, there is more to him than meets the eye. No TV or nights out for this man. He is totally focused, not only on Gracie Jiu-Jitsu but his Kingzenco Training Centres which incorporate a number of martial arts services. His KAGS (Kingzenco Anti Grapple System) is particularly interesting, enabling you to cover the essential skills needed to protect yourself against a skilled attacker in just 4 hours! Not anyone can do this, only a person who knows the ins and outs of his field can implement and be aware of the essential skills that are required for this to be effective. In my eyes, Sacha is the Tim Ferris of self protection.
I am privilege to be taught by a world class practitioner and someone who is constantly learning, developing, evaluating in every aspect of his business and life. Sacha King comes highly recommended and I encourage anyone who wants to succeed in the most efficient way possible, to book a lesson with Sacha. Just don’t ask him to take you to Scarborough Fair!
I’ve always been a fan of martial arts and in my ongoing research I have always tried Masters available that could guarantee me the best in their job. After trained myself with Masters considered the best ones of Krav Maga, Koryu Uchinadi Kempo Ju Jutsu, Judo, in Israel, USA, Europe I was looking for an instructor who could ensure greater security in the defense on the ground.
I evaluated, I tried and my choice could only fall on the Gracie Family’s School, the Founders of GJJ and I found Sacha Martin Luther King in the UK, the only black belt in Europe developed by the Gracie Academy.
Long way from Italy but no problem.
We met and my choice was the right one … great technical preparation, professionalism, love for one’s work. I trained with Sacha 2-3 hours a day in private for a week and then I came back to Italy and still returned back to him at a later date. I had found what I was looking for and my technique was enriched with new strategies and not only on the ground.
His understanding of great technique, his great preparation, and a warrior on the mat, combined with a students determination, commitment and application is guaranteed to bear fruit.
Sacha is the right Master for those who want to start this self defense without risking capturing defects and bad habits that could adversely affect their real fight preparation and for those who want to learn this defense complete despite not having any experience. For the professional looking for a Coach to complete his preparation, for all members of the police and private security who wish to complete and enrich their professional preparation and readiness, then this is your guy!
Remember: “I know you are teaching me, but who taught to you?”
As students of a martial art, it is important to know how the art has been handed down from instructor to student … and I know the lineage of Sacha !!
The secret to become strong … be humble! Student … always!
I thank Sacha for what has given me … and to all those who read me I hope that the strength and serenity are always with them.
With a keen interest in martial arts I have trained in various combat sports and reality based martial arts systems and have been fortunate enough to source out some of the best instructors in the country.
Being a certified door supervisor and having worked in the security industry for the last 14 years i have been in many situations which have required me to protect myself or others in a self defence situation. I can honestly say i can not recommend Sacha highly enough! Firstly he is an official Gracie Academy certified black belt and his knowledge and understanding of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system is eye opening.
My private lessons have been fun and very beneficial. My skill level has accelerated from training private lessons with Sacha who understands what works in a real confrontation and what doesn’t. Sacha has the ability to teach you any technique in various ways meaning if you’re finding it difficult to understand something he has the ability to teach you in another way by breaking down the technique.
On a personal level Sacha is a really nice guy and easy and fun to get along with which makes the learning experience much more pleasurable. Do yourself a favor and train with a real combat master!
I have done many years training in various Martial arts and like to think I have quite a good level of knowledge in most things.
My initial contact was Sacha was quite a stroke of luck. I had been training in a typical ‘sports’ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School for a while and also became familiar with the more structured approach given online by the Gracies. Working 50-60 hours a week, every week, meant that training sessions in sports schools were painful and the learning curve slow whilst higher belts got to try their things.
I initially arranged a private lesson to cover some simple techniques that I thought I just needed some adjustments to. How wrong I was! Sacha took my understanding of the basic techniques to a new level and I left thinking that a majority of the higher belts could really learn a thing or two and that they should take the time to invest in some of the knowledge.
There was nothing coming close to the level of instruction near to me and, as I result I would make several 200+ mile round trips to have my technique looked at.
The training is personalized so the sessions always deliver as it depends how much you want out it. Whether its for self defence, working through a structure program like Gracie Combatives or working towards some sports jiu jitsu, the training is tailored as such meaning that the sessions are never wasted and you come out feeling like you have progressed massively.
Whatever your level you can guarantee that there will be something to be learned. Sachas enthusiasm for the techniques, the art and your own personal development during the session is fantastic.
If you want your understanding of self defence to improve, your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game changing or even just a gentle introduction to the art book Sacha now!
